Lockdown 8/28 – Milestone

Day 8 of my diary of a LOTR Fan Museum owner during our 4 week national lockdown - in NZ we’re uniting as a country to beat Covid-19 to break the chain and save lives, but …

Today is a milestone in my new job of STAY HOME and be kind. It marks the start of a new week. I also woke up feeling quite a lot better, with my symptoms much more like the congestion of a nasty cold. Thanks for the messages of support, but please don’t worry friends, I’m going to be just fine.

I do feel calmer from being tested. I’m no longer fretting whether to get tested, even though I’ve never really thought I had the virus. Yesterday my bubble buddies thought I should get tested cos I was pretty sick. But I didn’t just turn up at the testing station. I asked Healthline and their triage team and their view was “yes”, because my beloved works in a hospital.

Speaking of the beloved - I woke this morning to news about a new ICU created in the hospital he works at. The news lauded the speed with which this was established, and I knew that my backroom HR guy played his part in that. I felt very proud. Again, massive thanks to all you essential workers - you carry the fate of all of us!

Today’s a milestone indeed. Last week was an eye-opener, as the Old Gaffer would surely say. What a learning curve (no flattening of this one, folks!). It’s been weird to cope with being locked down, the silence of the streets, feeling tense in a supermarket, losing my rag for no reason. There’s also some contentment in being with loved ones.

The daily news of new cases, concerns about the impact of job losses and business closures, and the overseas escalation and deaths, just feel terrible. But it’s amazing how STAY HOME feels active rather than passive - it is actually a thing, a new job that is contributing to alleviating the crisis.

Discussions are starting about “after”, but I’m still focusing on taking it slowly and considering what to do with the time that is given. JRR knew that times of trial depend on careful thought, taking personal responsibility, and courage. My best wishes to all out there - I hope you can see your way to focusing on what to do with the precious time you are given. Kathy x
